Health Benefits to Drinking Lemon Water

As mentioned in My Kriya Cleansing Techniques, I discussed drinking lemon water as part of the Yoga Detox Retreat I attended in January, and how I continue to drink lemon water as a morning drink.

After waking up and completing my morning routine, I fill a mason jar with lukewarm (pre-boiled) water; if it is too hot, I will add cold (filtered) water to cool it down, and add half a lemon and a pinch… a tiny tiny pinch of cayenne pepper, and drink the lemon water an hour prior to eating breakfast.

I’m going to repeat myself from my My Kriya Cleansing Techniques post, but I find it important to note that while we sleep, our body is at work cleansing itself; in other words, we are “fasting” during this time, which is why it is so important for a good nights sleep.

When we stay up late and only get 3-4 hours of rest, we are depriving our body of this natural detox process.

The word breakfast literally means “break fast”; to break the fasting period with the first meal of the day, which we know as “breakfast”.

Now why ruin what or bodies are trying so hard to cleanse, by adding more garbage fatty foods?
Ever consider why you feel like crap throughout the day?  You eat crap, you are going to feel like crap.

You are what you eat – literally!

Lemon water supports the body’s cleanse by eliminating toxins, and acts as a natural energizer, as it hydrates and oxygenates the body, leaving it revitalized and refreshed.

Health benefits to Drinking Lemon Water

Not only do does lemon water provide medicinal values, but it aids digestion, and greatly benefits your organs.

The juice from the lemon aids digestion, relieving symptoms of indigestion, such as heartburn, belching and bloating.

Drinking lemon water also helps eliminate waste through the bowels more efficiently, alleviating constipation, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disorders.

The acidity of the lemon destroys the bacteria built up in our bodies, and supports the liver and kidneys by ridding these organs of toxins.

Cayenne pepper also aids digestion, increases your metabolism, and helps regulate blood sugar.

Drinking these two ingredients combined, and you are treating yourself to anti-fungal, immune boosting, and detoxification properties!

On top of digestion and detoxifying our organs, other health benefits to drinking lemon water include: Alkalizing the Body, Boosts the Immune System, Clears Skin, Promotes Healing, Relieves Tooth Pain, Relieves Respiratory Problems, Aids in Dental Care, Controls High Blood Pressure, Cures Throat infections, Great for Weight Loss, Treats Rheumatism and Relieves Fevers.

Lemon Detox Diet

You may have heard of people you know, or celebrities doing a lemon water detox, or “Master Cleanse” which consists of a 10 day fast.

This “diet” or “detox” of drinking only lemon water in place of food is not recommend, as you are depriving your body of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to sustain, detox and flush out the toxins naturally.

Part of this fad “diet” requires drinking about a quart of salt water every day and laxative mixtures at night.
Now please, use your head. The reason why people lose weight is because the salt water is flushing out their intestines.

The laxative mixture, further assists the flushing process, making this “diet” worse, as you lose important electrolytes, and vital nutrients and minerals.

To top it off, there is no protein in the “diet” – the basic building blocks of cells!!

Truth be told, there is more harm in this than beneficial.
Sure you will lose a bit of weight, but chances are you are going to gain it right back once you are done the cleanse.

Eat smart, eat clean, eat healthy.

If you eat what you’ve always eaten, you will weigh what you’ve always weighed

I heard lemon water was good when trying to lose weight. Never heard about warm lemon water. Bout to add this to my daily routines. Less see what it can do!!!

    1. Hi Sara,
I prefer using warm water (or room temperature), as it provides the optimal health benefits of the lemon.
When using fresh lemon, hot water can destroy some of the enzymatic properties, while cold water may cause difficulties for digestive benefits of the lemon.

      Hope that helps 🙂

Keep me posted on your preference and if you notice any difference!

I have been eating a lot of junk lately. Can I use lemon water to just detox? I really am in need of a lifestyle change. I need to be healthy.

    1. Hi Mika,
I wouldn’t suggest doing any sort of detox as a means of dieting. Simply changing the way you eat is detoxifying your body, especially when eating more raw vegetables and drinking a lot of water.
Start drinking lemon water in the morning, and change the foods you eat, by eliminating processed foods, and dairy if you can.

Introduce more vegetables, fruit, beans, grains and seeds into your diet. If you are a meat eater, try decreasing your pork consumption, and stick with leaner proteins like chicken, beef and fish.

If you need further information, please let me know 🙂

  5. Thanks for the article!
I also tried the diet once and I must admit that I felt a lot better afterwards. I might even consider doing it again once in a while because it reduces a lot of stress and I even lost 5 pounds with it! 🙂
